Privacy Policy
Katkut AI ("Katkut", "we", "us") is a mobile app that helps you turn short video clips and photos into a ready-to-post reel — and, in Studio Mode, turn one talking-head video into a captioned, edited short. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.
1. Information we collect
Account information (only if you sign in). Signing in with Google or Apple is optional. If you choose to sign in, we receive your name and email address (and profile photo, for Google) from your account via our authentication provider (Supabase), so we can identify your account and your subscription status. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, Apple gives us a private relay address instead of your real one. If you use Studio Mode, we also store how many minutes of transcription your account has used in the current calendar month, to enforce your plan's monthly allowance — this count carries no video, audio, or caption content with it.
Your media: processed on-device, with one exception. When you pick videos or photos to build a Reel, Katkut reads them locally on your device to analyze, trim, and assemble it. These files are never uploaded to any server. Studio Mode works the same way with one difference, described in full in the next section: it extracts just the audio track and sends that — not the video — to a transcription provider so it can generate captions.
Exported reel. The finished reel is saved to your device's gallery so you can share it yourself (e.g. to TikTok, Instagram, or CapCut). We do not receive a copy of it.
Crash and error reports. When the app hits an error it cannot recover from, we send a diagnostic report so we can fix it — the error message, where in our code it happened, and basic device information such as your device model and operating system version. If you are signed in, the report carries your account's internal identifier so we can match it to a support request; it never carries your email address. File names are removed before the report is sent, because a name like "IMG_2026_Bali_beach.mp4" says where you were — we keep only the file type, which is all we need to diagnose the fault. Reports never contain your videos, photos, audio, captions, or transcripts.
2. Studio Mode and AI processing
Studio Mode is a separate, opt-in feature: pick one talking-head video, and Katkut transcribes it, writes captions, and finds b-roll automatically. It requires signing in, because your monthly transcription allowance is tied to your account. Producing this requires sending a limited, specific slice of your video — never the video file itself — to outside providers. Here is exactly what each one receives:
- ElevenLabs (transcription). Katkut extracts the audio track from your video on your phone (16kHz, mono) and sends only that audio — never the video, never your photos — to ElevenLabs, our speech-to-text provider, along with the spoken language you selected. ElevenLabs returns a word-by-word transcript with timestamps. Our server streams the audio straight through to ElevenLabs; it is not stored or logged on our side. See ElevenLabs' privacy policy.
- Google Gemini (caption & b-roll planning). The transcript text — plus the one-line topic description you optionally type, and your chosen caption language/script — is sent to Google's Gemini API so it can write caption text, place emoji, and choose short English search terms for b-roll (e.g. "kathmandu street market"). Gemini never receives your audio or video directly, only the text produced by ElevenLabs and, optionally, your own typed description. See Google's Gemini API Additional Terms of Service and Google's Privacy Policy.
- Pexels and GIPHY (stock footage & reaction GIFs). The short English search terms Gemini generates — never your audio, video, or transcript — are sent to Pexels for stock b-roll footage, and to GIPHY for reaction GIFs and stickers. Both return clips that Katkut downloads directly to your device; the files are not relayed through our own servers. See Pexels' privacy policy and GIPHY's privacy policy.
None of these providers ever receive your source video, your photos, or your account details — each call is limited to the single piece of data described above, and is authenticated by our own server rather than anything that identifies you to the vendor. We do not use your Studio content to train our own models, and we do not instruct any of these vendors to use it to train theirs; each vendor's own policy (linked above) governs what happens on their side.
International transfers. ElevenLabs, Google, Pexels and GIPHY may process data on servers outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards those providers offer for such transfers — including the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, where applicable. See the policies linked above for each provider's specifics, or contact us if you'd like more detail.
One known limitation, disclosed rather than hidden: GIPHY's library is user-uploaded, and unlike Pexels' stock footage, it does not carry a blanket commercial-use licence. We filter GIPHY results by content rating to reduce — not eliminate — inappropriate results, and GIPHY's required attribution is carried with any GIF or sticker used. If your exported reel includes a GIPHY clip and you plan to use that reel commercially, you're responsible for reviewing what it contains before you post it — see "Your content" in the Terms of Service.
Studio Mode is entirely optional — the Reel editor never sends anything off your device.
3. Permissions we request, and why
- Photos/Videos access: to let you pick clips and build your reel. Clips stay on your device and are never uploaded.
- Save to gallery: to save your finished reel back to your device.
4. How we use information
- To operate your account and verify your subscription status (free vs. Pro).
- To show ads to free-tier users, and to remove ads and the watermark for Pro subscribers.
- To generate captions, translations, emoji, and b-roll suggestions when you use Studio Mode, via the AI providers described above.
- To provide customer support if you contact us.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
5. Payments and subscriptions
Katkut Pro removes the watermark from your exports. How your payment is processed depends on your platform:
- Android and Web: subscriptions are purchased through Stripe, our payment processor. Katkut never receives or stores your card details — Stripe handles that directly.
- iOS: subscriptions are purchased through Apple's In-App Purchase system, billed to your Apple ID. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status; it receives your purchase receipt and a device-generated identifier, not your payment details. See also Apple's privacy policy.
In both cases, we only receive whether your subscription is active — never your payment method or billing details.
6. Advertising
Katkut is free to use, supported by ads shown only on the analyzing and exporting screens (a brief ad before each of those steps starts, plus a small banner while your reel is actually processing). We never show ads inside the editor, settings, or anywhere else in the app. Subscribing to Pro removes ads entirely, along with the export watermark.
Ads are delivered by Google AdMob. AdMob and its partner ad networks may collect information such as your device's advertising identifier, approximate location, and app usage data to deliver and measure ads, including personalized ads where permitted:
- On iOS, personalized ads require your permission via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. Declining doesn't limit any app feature — you'll simply see non-personalized ads instead.
- In the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, and for users in regulated US states, we ask for your consent before showing personalized ads, through a standard consent form shown the first time it's required.
See Google's how Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and AdMob's privacy & security practices for more detail on what's collected and how it's used.
7. Third-party services
We use Supabase to handle account sign-in and store basic account information. We use Stripe and/or RevenueCat to process subscription payments — see "Payments and subscriptions" above. We use Google AdMob to serve ads — see "Advertising" above. For Studio Mode, we use ElevenLabs (transcription), Google Gemini (caption and b-roll planning), and Pexels and GIPHY (stock footage and reaction GIFs) — see "Studio Mode and AI processing" above for exactly what each one receives.
We use Sentry for crash and error reporting — see "Information we collect" above for exactly what a report contains. Our Sentry data is stored in the European Union.
We do not use any analytics SDK. We do not track what you do inside the app, which features you use, or how long you use them. Crash reporting is the only diagnostic data we collect, and it is sent only when something has actually gone wrong.
8. Data retention and deletion
Your reels, drafts, and picked media stay on your device and are removed when you delete the app or the project itself. Studio drafts — transcripts, captions, and chosen b-roll — are also saved on your device only; we don't keep a copy on our servers. Audio sent for transcription is streamed through and is not stored or logged on our servers; we keep only a running monthly count of transcription minutes used against your account (see "Information we collect" above), which resets each calendar month. If you signed in, you can request deletion of your account information — including this usage count — at any time by contacting us (below).
9. Children's privacy
Katkut is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
10. Your rights under GDPR and Finnish law
If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK, or otherwise protected by the GDPR, you have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; correct it if it's inaccurate; request its erasure; restrict or object to certain processing; and receive a copy of it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent (for example, personalized ads — see "Advertising" above), you can withdraw that consent at any time without affecting anything done before the withdrawal.
For account data and Studio Mode processing, our legal basis is that the processing is necessary to provide the feature you've asked to use (performance of a contract, GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) — not consent, though Studio Mode itself is entirely opt-in and clearly labelled before you use it.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. If you're not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority — in Finland, that's the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (Tietosuojavaltuutetun toimisto).
